About Aston Martin Cars Reviews Specs and Wallpapers Car - Aston Martin was founded in 1914 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford who had previously worked together selling Singer racing cars. They were both good mechanics and Martin was also a talented driver. The company name was derived from co-founder Martin and the Aston Clinton Hill Climb, where he had enjoyed racing their Singer cars.

With a background in racing cars Aston Martin was best known on the racing circuit and took part in many great contests including the French Grand Prix and The Le Mans 24 hour. Aston also set world speed endurance records at the famous Brooklands race track in Surrey. However, despite the success on the track Aston Martin encountered many financial problems and had many changes of ownership in the 1920's and 1930's.

In 1947 the company was bought by David Brown a well established tractor manufacturer, who was keen to develop new models, and so the DB1, DB2 and DB3 were introduced in 1948, 1950 and 1951. He also acquired Lagonda, and so Aston Martin Lagonda was born. Success continued on the race track and in 1958 the DB4 won the World Sportscar Championship, the Nürburgring and the RAC Tourist Trophy.

In 1963 they introduced the DB5, an iconic car most famous for it's appearance (with a few modifications!) in the 1964 James Bond film 'Goldfinger'. Then came the DB6 (1965) which was the first four seater followed by the DBS and DBS V8 in 1967. Despite this success the company struggled financially and yet again it was bought and sold several times during the 1970's.

In 1977 the V8 Vantage and the convertible Volante were launched. In 1980 Aston hoped to buy the struggling MG motor company, but this plan failed and following more financial problems Aston were forced to sell part of their business to Ford in 1987.

The DB7 was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1993 and was an instant success. Further new models followed in early 2000 with the V12 Vanquish, and the DB9. Sadly Ford had to sell Aston in 2006 and it is now owned by a group of investors. Despite these set backs Aston Martin is expanding into Europe and China and has recently announced it's intention to revive the Lagonda marque in 2009.
